Oh, and before I begin, I didn't read the sticky, so if this violates anything...oh, well.
Anyhow. With the publishing of Shadowrise by Tad Williams I decided to reread the first book, and then continue to the end of the series.
Now, its okay. It gets good around page 160 or so.
BUT:
Is it just me or does the overall plot and feel (as well as themes, characters, etc.) seem like a rehashed version of Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn?
A crippled prince (left hand in both) that is thought of as strange or unusual. A head strong princess. An ancient mysterious "fairy people" that have had a war with humanity and are extremely strange and are now appearing in the world again after a long silence. A race of short people that happen to be exceptionally good at a particular part of life. The list could go on.
Now, I love Tad. I think he's great. However, when I start feeling like I'm reading MS&T part 2, there is something wrong.
That being said, I know one of Tad's talents is taking something we are familiar with and then subtly twisting it in an interesting way. Example: Funderlings = Dwarves/Hobbits, Sithi = Elves, Norn = evil Elves that don't get enough sun.
Yet, I think he shouldn't have quite taken a decade between fantasies. I dont' know. I'm just rambling, sorry.
