So how is everyone...
« on: December 05, 2009, 09:16:33 PM »
Not sure how long its been since I logged in, though I'm guessing its something on the order of 6 months which is a VERY long time.  Sorry for the disappearing act; the WoT universe had become very stale for me, and...yeah, well you get the idea.

Anyway...was in the UK last month and saw the HIGHLY WONDERFUL cover they have over there for TGS.  None of this half-assed Darrell K. Sweet on tryptophan ridiculousness that we're subjected to here.  No, this was a beautiful burnished gold cover with a very attractive re-work of the classic Wheel graphic in black.  Tres sexy.  Makes me wish I'd bought it.

Currently, I'm working my way through the backcatalog on Audiobook, though I'm having a little trouble with Michael Kramer.  Man, does he take himself seriously!  All this while trying to continue to read - yes, actually read - other books.  Currently working on "The Meaning of Night" by Michael Cox.  Very good book, and just delightful to hold.

So...that's that then.

Hey Geoff!  Welcome back!

There's been some good discussion lately...especially since TGS came out.  Have you read it yet?  I know you said you were doing a re-read....but, I just wouldn't be able to stand it.  I'd have to read TGS first!  hahaha

Anyway, glad to see you back!

Welcome back Geoff.

Garrison, I am pretty sure Geoff is a few books behind. So I don't think he can just read TGS. I kind of remember him saying his plan was to read the books all at once when it was finally finished. heh
I could have been a contender.

Hola, stranger!  :)  How's life?

Not that I would ever try to drag anyone all unwilling back to the WoT fold, but if you were to feel so inclined but didn't want to take the time to re-read, I highly recommend the Tor.com re-read blog.   The blogger, Leigh Butler, is smart, funny, sarcastic and takes frequent issue with the books.  She hits the high points, ruthlessly mocks the low points and frequently makes me lol.  The comments on her commentary can also be enlightening but not necessary if you don't want to take the time to plow through them.  (For example, the comments following her review of "The Gathering Storm" topped out at almost 3500 posts.  Totally nuts.)

My love for the books has remained unabated, but the blog ratcheted it up to something a bit more intense in the days prior to the release of TGS.  If you were to take the chance, you might find the staleness somewhat relieved.

I'm just sayin'...

Anyway... good to see you here again.  It ain't been the same without you!

The question should be...why?

As long as the 'whys' outweigh the 'why-nots' we're golden!

One of these days, I'm sure I'll get around to reading TGS, though its highly doubtful I'm going to crack a WoT book anytime before the series is completed.  There are just FAR too many great books out there...and on my shelf...just begging to be read first.  Here's what's on the "next up" list around here.

Ken Follett - The Pillars of the Earth and World Without End
Carlos Ruiz Zafon - The Angel's Game
Umberto Eco - The Name of the Rose
Michael Cox - The Glass of Time
Stephen Pressfield - The Gates of Fire, The Afghan Campaign and Killing Rommel
Peter Mathiessen - Shadow Country
Michael Gruber - The Forgery of Venus
Neil Peart - Traveling Music
Andre Dubus III - The House of Sand and Fog

...which should keep me busy - and vastly entertained - until Sanderson manages to finish the WoT behemoth.

Of that list I've read the two Ken Follett books.  Very good books...highly entertaining!  I think I have a reveiw up here on the Pillars of the Earth....I think.

I think you'll like both of them, though.  :-)

Good luck with your reading...I guess we all have a neverending list. hahaha
Let us know if any of those really knock your socks off!

You want your socks knocked off?  Check out Michael Cox's "The Meaning of Night".  Bloody brilliant story set in Victorian England.  Loving it.

I've read Ken Follett - back in my Robert Ludlum spy thriller days.  Also read "The Name of the Rose" after seeing the movie.  Needless to say, I struggled with the Latin, but enjoyed it overall.

I've promised myself a turn with "The House of Sand and Fog", again because of the movie.

Since I have time on my hands right now...  ::)

Maybe when I finish my current course I'll be able to read books for pleasure again. In the mean time I have to study for two oral exams and three written exams. sigh.
