Well, you are referring to what pop culture has turned Vampires into. The actual lore of Vampires is far different then what they are portrayed today. There were no daywalkers in it, no hero vamps with souls or anything like those crapfest movies Underworld. The only reason to watch Underworld is to watch Kate Beckinsdale run around in skin tight leather. You want to know a woman who can pull off a Lanfear, she'd be on top of my list.
Like most things touched by pop culture the lore is a lot darker then what they turned it into. Vampires these days, imo, aren't all that entertaining. They're either complete psychos like in 30 Days of Night or they are a Emo Vamp rip off from Anne Rice.
Werewolves on the other hand, Hollywood hasn't really touched on them a lot. Well, when compared to vampires. Imo, they aren't as interesting or menacing. They only come out during a full moon and person who becomes the werewolf is basically a Bruce Banner type character once every 28 days. That's probably why Underworld introduced the idea that Werewolves can learn to control the change and change whenever they want. Makes the person far more menacing and evil/good, instead of them being the poor sap who gets smoked at the end of the movie.
