Blu Ray movies
« on: April 25, 2008, 10:54:25 AM »
So in January I bought a PS3. I bought it for a few reasons, #1 being HD-DVD had just lost the format war, #2 80GB PS3 was discontinued and it was the only version being sold with PS2 backward compatibility, and #3 there were some PS3/PS2 games I wanted to play.

As many of you know I geek out about a few things. Obviously one of them was the Wheel of Time, and another one is Farscape. A couple of others I also geek out for is Star Wars, Transformers and Robotech.

Well this is where my #1 reason for buying a PS3 intersects with something I geek out for, and that being Robotech. It was just announced that Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles will be released on Blu Ray on Sept. 2nd. Awesome. Price, 39.98. Bummer.

**** like is why I own a total of 6 Blu Ray discs, one of which I actually bought. 5 of them being free for buying a PS3.
I could have been a contender.

*g* I quickly jumped on board the new format, right abouts when the war started. I had a 360 already, and I was able to get one dirt cheap through my discount with best buy, and a PS3 I got because I just love new systems.

I own probably about 20 titles of the combines formats, I got the 5 free HD-DVD and BluRay for buying the respective players.

And personally, I don't know what it is, but last generation systems, I liked Xbox a lot more than both PS2 and Gamecube, but this time around, PS3 just seems the more logical choice to me when it comes down to it, I like the rechargable controllers better, the graphics just look more crisp on games (Which ones I've actually seen played on 360 and played on PS3)

And I kind of always figured Blu-Ray would win out for some reason, but if you're looking at a blu-ray player, definitely, 100% go for the PS3, even if you don't game.

Why?

Only a few select players (And I'm talking EXPENSIVE)  including the PS3 have automatic firmware updates for the blu-ray players, which happens every 5-6 months.
I believe the world is burning to the ground.

Blu-Ray... didn't they try something like that already?   Like about the same time as the whole Beta vs VHS debacle?

No, I know they didn't.  It's just that, having survived the whole 8-track to cassette to CD to Mp3 (yes, I finally got one) history, I'm a little reluctant to go after the "next best thing".  As soon as they designate something as the "final next best thing", I'll be all over it!
The voices may not be real, but they have some pretty good ideas...

Yes, the PS3 is the best Blu Ray player on the market, and has been since the beginning. Mainly because the PS3 can be updated, unlike every other Blu Ray player on the market. Buying a stand alone Blu Ray player is throwing away money. HD-DVD was really the superior spec, and he Blu Ray spec has gradually morphed into being more like the HD-DVD spec.  It's still more DRMed then HD-DVD though.

As far as the PS3 vs the 360. I've had the complete opposite experience, but I do have an HDMI port on my 360. It also doesn't help that almost all the 3rd party games are better on the 360, and very few of the PS3 games, imo, are even worth a rental.

Do you mean Laser Disc? Those things sucked. My dad used to rent a player every once in a while and some discs. They discs were as big as a record.

The Blu Ray versus HD-DVD thing wasn't asnearly bad as the VHS vs Beta, it was decided a lot quicker with the movie studios abandoning HD-DVD pretty quickly. Honestly though, imo, if you have an HDTV and a good upscaling DVD player DVD is good enough, but Blu Ray is still better.

I dunno, it might just be me, but the difference in games seems to be made by the controller, and I like the feel of the PS3 one better for some reason, I thought the whole DMC4 debacle was a little ridiculous, but one of my friends got it for 360 and his load times were about 10x longer than mine (That's not saying much though, because the loads were 2-3 seconds.)

I don't have the HDMI port on my 360, but I have a VGA hookup on my tv so I switched to that, looks pretty crisp.

I have be 360 currently set up through VGA since my TV only has one HDMI port and since the PS3 comes with no HD cables I used my 360s HDMI cable to connect my PS3 to my tv. If hdmi switches weren't so fricken expensive I'd have one.

The difference between VGA and HDMI is noticeable, at least it was to me. Colors were sharper, VGA is known to wash out the colors, and the picture was crisp. When I sold my old 360 (not long after it broke and I got my replacement I should add) to get my 360 elite I noticed the difference right away when I plugged in the HDMI cable.
I could have been a contender.
