Favorite recurring memory of WOT...
« on: March 18, 2008, 10:25:25 AM »
Ok, I think we all have these, right?

Share you favorite memory or maybe a scene or phrase, from the WOT books, that has really stayed with you as you go about life...

Here's mine:
In The Dragon Reborn, when Matt wakes up from being healed and separated from the Shadar Logath dagger...he is SO hungry that he eats enough for five or six grown men.  I don't know if I was just hungry when I read that part...or what...but when Matt "rolled up a thick slice of beef and dipped it in brown mustard..." dude!  I had to go get some deli meat and mustard!!!

Every time I think of deli meat I think of that scene!   :)

It might have something to do with that scene also being the much anticipated first time inside Matt Cauthon's head...but...I don't know.

Anyway, does anyone else have a scene or something that sticks with them?

*off to get some deli meat*

*g* I have one, it always stuck in my head. It's also TDR, whenever I see any kind of sword battle in a movie with an odd or misshapen sword I think of Callandor and Rand's battle with Ba'alzamon in Tear.

There was this one scene, where Egwene "folded her arms beneath her breasts" that really stays with me.  I'm not sure of the exact location in the books where it happened, but it was pretty memorable.  Unless it was Nynaeve...

Seriously, I'm not sure if there is a particularly memorable scene that stays with me.  I was sitting here right now trying to think of one, and then realized that that sort of defeats the purpose of it being memorable.  I did, however always enjoy the sub-plot of the courtship of Nynaeve and Lan.  The dynamic between the two of them and the slow breakdown of his will was well written and kind of fun to watch.

Got several... Moiraine's telling of the story of what was the origin of Emond's Field... Also like Mat's waking up in the Tower... and the whole Lan/Nynaeve story.  "Enjoyed" may be the wrong word but what happened at Dumai's Wells sticks out in my mind...  Colavaere's fall from power is something else I go back to from time to time.
The voices may not be real, but they have some pretty good ideas...

I agree with Jacy with much of what she said. Moraine's telling the story of Manetheren was truly great

Another scene that stood out for me is one from The Great Hunt, when Perin is tracking Rand. We learn that wolves name for Rand is Shadowkiller. Stuck with me so much I've used that name as a online handle for years.

"I have won again, Lews Therin." Rand seeing all the futures where he fails to save the world and at the end when he lays dying he hears those words.

In the Fires of Heaven where Rand steps in to the Ter'angreal and lives his ancestors past. Where we learn how the Aiel stopped following the Way of the Leaf. How the world was broken. All the stories were compelling and well written.

Perin's saving of the Two Rivers. It is one of the few stories from Perin's perspective I've really enjoyed, and it was one of the best threads in the WoT series.

Of course there is the classic "Kneel Aes Sedai, or be knelt."

The Cleansing of Saidin. Say what you want for the rest of that book, but the end of Path of Daggers made up for any drudgery in spades. The ending was truly epic.
I could have been a contender.

^ except that the cleansing of saiden happened in Winter's heart;)

For me, in Fires of Heaven (I think?) when Rand is bringing the Aiel back across the dragonwall afte rthe Shaido, and they're just about to begin that big battle in Carhien, and as it's happening Mat's trying to run away from it all and blunders into that carhienen/tairen column of soldiers about to walk into an ambush, fights himself over it and finally decides to warn them, promising himself he'll leave right after, and ends up leading the entire thing throughout the whole battle. Afterwards it mentiones that mat kept trying to sneak away form them again and after time followed after him and ended up blundering into some great big battle that he had to save them from again. just picturing that whole thing in my mind, I thought it was pretty hilarious, and it's also the first time we see Mat using his new tactical knowledge. Pretty much everything with the Band of the red hand afterwards I thought was great, including the new stuff in Knife of Dreams when he's finally reunited with them.

Really? I thought that at first and then looked it up online and it said Path of Daggers. Should have trusted myself on that. Stupid internet.

For me it'll always be in "Scouting and Discoveries" from TDR when Mat smashes up Galad and Gawyn. My all-time favorite scene in the whole series, just perfect Mat.... *happy sigh*

I forgot about that one!

Very good chapter, loved how he was just starving through the whole thing.

there are a lot of really good memories in the book...

when elayne saved birgitte by bonding her...and thom had to comfort nyneave, who was walking around barefoot in her shift..

when egwene was training with the Aiel...and having to pay for the lies she told the Aiel...when she became amyrlin....

when elayne became aviendah's sister...

oh....and how the green man died...it's not entirely a good memory, but i loved how loial sang in the and...
plus, i really like it when loial panics everytime his mother is mentioned...:)
i hope there are more good memories to come. hope rand will see tam again....what ever happened to the sword tam gave him?....i think i lost  track of it...
