Cloverfield

I saw this movie Saturday. If you kept up with the hype this movie had been generating on the internet then I should say it does not live up to that hype. The movie is good, but it isn't anything special either.

The good things about the movie is that the special effects are really good. It was pretty immersive experience. If you sit behind a couple of teenage girls you will hear some shrieks.

The problems with the movie is how it is shot, it helps add to the immersion but it also causes problems. If you got sick watching the Blair Witch Project, and not from it being a seriously bad movie but from the way it was shot you will probably spend a good time barfing during or after the movie. Like the Blair Witch Project the entire movie is shot by the victims, with the shaking and constantly moving camera. This doesn't bother me that much, at least not enough to make me nauseous, but I did leave the theater feeling decidedly ill.

The story itself outside of it concentrating on the human main characters exclusively is pretty much a giant monster attacks city movie by the numbers. There are no real surprised there. It does put the past ventures to shame though. I have heard some people say the monster itself seems to be directly take from Dungeon and Dragons. I don't know if that is true or not, but I can say I didn't really find the monster all that memorable. Maybe it was because it didn't have a lot of screen time.

The ending is pretty meh worthy though.
I could have been a contender.

You know what movie really surprised me?

Dragon Wars (D-War)

It was released on DVD/Blu-Ray about three weeks ago, and it was... odd.

*l* If you go into it thinking it's not gonna be great, you might enjoy yourself. I think I had to look at it as more of a seriously-this-makes-no-sense movie than anything else, but it was silly.
I believe the world is burning to the ground.

If you would have peace, prepare for war.
