Finally Reading "New Spring"
« on: July 27, 2007, 09:27:44 AM »
How many years have I had it?

The book so far is surprisingly good. I always liked the original short story, and what I have read so far adds to it really well. It is kind of cool seeing Moraine as an unsure, hot tempered Accepted. Plus the first chapter with Lan was an exceedingly good read.  It seems to have more of the feel of the first six books.

Of course I am only 4 chapters in, but I am really enjoying it. Maybe it also helped that I also enjoyed the last WoT book quite a bit so much of my faith in RJ had been restored.
I could have been a contender.

*feels guilty now*

I've not read the last WoT book. It had been so long i'd forgotten what happens. I am hopefully getting my collection from my parents tomorrow and then will re-read the whole thing from start to finsih.

BUt New Spring is surprisingly good and I enjoyed it a heck of alot.

I'm still not quite enthused enough to figure out which book I was up to when I stopped reading them and starting from the start isn't exactly appealing either. Ahh well...

My guess, you probably gave up during Crossroads of Twilight. Knife of Dreams was pretty good. Probably because RJ said there wasn't going to be more then 13 books so he had to start advancing the plot again.
I could have been a contender.

Well... that's just it - I didn't really give up so much as read a book, go 'Hmm... Interesting.' and then completely forget which book it was. From memory I was smack bang in the middle of the series. The last clear memory I have of something happening was when Rand was locked in a trunk. I retained no memories from the last book I read which is why I don't know which one I am up to. I'm not really stressed about it though...

Lord of Chaos was the one with Rand locked in the trunk... Between that one and Knife of Dreams, there was a lot of (seemingly) pointless fluff - although, after KoD, I've regained my hope that RJ's vision is still intact and that, maybe, even the fluff had purpose.

As for New Spring - thoroughly enjoyed it.  I really hope that he does manage - somehow, and after Memory of Light - to finish the other two prequels.  Most especially the one he wants to write that tells Tam al'Thor's story.

Just how did he go from being a simple tabac farmer in the Two Rivers to a Blademaster in the Illian army... Got to be a good story there.
The voices may not be real, but they have some pretty good ideas...

I don't know about ever losing much interest...I think I'm in hook-line-and-sinker...and I think I've always been that way.  So, far...I've enjoyed all the books.  The most disappointing one...was that stupid "The World of WOT" or whatever it was titled.  That blew ass...creating more questions than it answered.  Although, I have to admit that I've used it quite a bit as I write Garrison Bain stories.  *shrug*  (it still blew ass...hehe)

Anyway, I really liked 'New Spring' and got a kick out of reading about Lan actually NOT being the most bad-boy blade master that exists.  The end left a bit to be desired...not sure if I liked the way it ended...but...it gave a good base for Morraine's 'goodness'.

Finally finished the book, man I read it slow. I liked it, it was probably the best WoT book I've read in awhile. It had a good base with New Spring, and what he added to it was really good.

The only problem I had with it is that it made Moraine seems really childish and petty. It wasn't horrible, and show that she grew up a lot between New Spring and The Eye of the World.

As far as the ending, I couldn't imagine it ending anyother way. That was the pay off after all. Althugh the way Moraine treated throughout the book you'd have to wonder why Lan didn't tell her to "Get stuffed" no matter what she said. lol

I was incredibly surprised to find Moiraine had had some... er... "experiences"... in the White Tower that didn't have to do with the One Power... ;)

You really should buy it. It is a good read and gives a lot of background information on a lot of our favorite characters. I am just said the book about Tam al'Thor will never be written now, that was meant to be the next book in the prequels. :(

You never know what kind of notes he left, perhaps we may yet hear of it, maybe he even put something in MoL.
