Since I've always been fascinated by dragons, how could I not read the Pern books? *s*
The concept of the series is quite simple and also a bit weird, I think. It's not one of my favourites, although I can't say I disliked it, either. Otherwise I wouldn't have read most of the books anyway.
I started because of the Dragons and their riders but soon found the harpers and craftsmen much more interesting. The dragon riders seem pretty redundand as soon as they don't have to fight the spores, and I wonder how AnneMcCaffrey would continue their presence on Pern as soon as the Red Star is gone.

Always intended to, but never actually read them.

I have a 3 books in one thingy for it and read them. I believe it is the first 3 books of the series. They were pretty good, haven't read any of the others though.
I could have been a contender.

She is.  She has the gift of making her settings easily believable.  I also liked her early "Ship" books.  And the first Crystal Singer.

I thought she carried the Pern series a book or two too far; after "All the Weyrs of Pern", I kind of lost interest.  But the early ones were very, very good.

What I miss is that the main protagonists, which I always considered the dragons, are of more use than just fighting the spores. They are what makes Pern special, but if you think further ahead... as soon as the spores won't fall anymore they'll most likely have to disappear themselves, or otherwise be hunted down and destroyed for ages to come, since they'll be of no further use and on the other hand "cost" way too much.
I also found the idea of the spores itself a bit bizarre, and I wonder what exactly causes their existance and fall onto Pern. Maybe I missed that information, though. I lost interest after Dragons Dawn, which is one of my favourite books of the series, probably since it did explain most of what I was wondering about and I didn't expect any big surprises in the following books anymore.

Her work in Dragonsdawn was quite good.

Now I'm going to have to read it again to answer your question about the spores.  :D

The Pern books were my first Sci-Fi love, really. I picked up DragonFlight in 8th grade and was an instant fan. I have read all the way up to the next to latest book... I would've read the new one, but books are really expensive here and they've only got the hardcover, so I'll have to wait on it.

The spores are lifeforms from the Oort Cloud. It was hinted (I think in Dragonsdawn) that they may have been seeded as a biological weapon by whatever aliens the humans were fighting around that time (in order to prevent humans from spreading... but that seems really farfetched, it's more likely just random life), but it was never said for certain. Either way, they come from that ring of particles and debris (same place that comets come from), and when the highly eccentric Red Star (a wandering planet that was caught much in the same way that Pluto was in our Solar System) travels through that cloud, its gravity drags along a whole ton of those thread spores. At some point when the Red Star makes its orbit, it comes near enough to Pern that Pern's orbit that Pern's gravity is able to snatch some of these thread spores that have been following the Red Star.

The last one I read was "All the Weyrs of Pern".  I'm sure a few have been written since then - by the Dragonlady, herself, or with her son.

Which one is "the last one"?

Alright, I just checked Wikipedia, and I'm actually several books behind now... The last I read was Skies of Pern. Or maybe Dragon's Kin, I don't remember. But since All the Weyrs, there's been 10 (!) books. Since Skies of Pern, there's been 4.

Late arrival on this topic...sorry!

I really like this series too!  I loved Dragonsdawn...that was my favorite so far.

Dragonflight was a very good one too!

These are the latest ones i've read...so, that's probably why they're sticking out in my head.  hahahaha
